ICE Releases Some Transgender Women Seeking Asylum

Transgender women seeking asylum in the United States are often held by ICE in a separate pod at a detention center near Grants, New Mexico. On Friday, July 27, advocates saw a small victory when some women were released.

Wage theft is a very serious problem in New Mexico, and can destroy the financial solvency of working families like Sabina and Nirma’s who live from paycheck to paycheck. Unfortunately, all too often, unscrupulous employers refuse to pay workers for all their hours, violate minimum wage laws, refuse to pay overtime and force people to work off the clock.

Free clinics scheduled to help with DACA renewals

Everyone gets sick, but only half of the people who work in Albuquerque have access to sick days. 

Healthy Workforce has such broad support that a group that’s trying to stop it has launched a campaign filled with lies about the ordinance and is even trying to cheat voters out of a fair election. The Journal Editorial Board joined the opposition campaign with a recent editorial chock-full of misinformation starting with the date of the election, which is Oct. 3, not the 10th, as the editorial says. So much for journalistic integrity.

May Day protesters condemn Trump, immigration policy

More than a thousand people came out for the May Day Rise Up ABQ Rally at Tiguex Park, which featured live music, dancing, children’s activities and speakers who addressed what they called assaults on the rights of workers, immigrants and teachers, and oppressive policies coming out of Washington.
